about

“Progress is a Process 3” is Habit Blcx’s latest offering to the aptly named anthology. The album’s opening tracks, “Get Away” and “This Love,” feel like the nebulous haze of dawn, the first minutes of morning when eyes first open and gain focus. Instrumentally, they are thinly layered, artfully juxtaposing classic snare drum hits against more delicate accoutrements, like a pulsing synth or a tickled piano.

In some ways, PIAP3 is quintessentially Habit Blcx — it is observant and clear-minded, as his past offerings have proven to be. But it is also experimental and inward-looking in a way that serves to broaden our understanding the man and the processes that forged him.

PIAP3 meanders, as our days do, across varying moods: the smothering heat of high noon (“The Move”), the calm of dusk (“Time”), the confident independence of midnight (“Reflect”). It is a hyper-contemplative work that is deeply personal, with Habit Blcx ruminating on his experiences with time, and love, and weightlessness, and frustration, and glee, and all of these emotions that conglomerate into the lived experiences of this black man, on this day, in this age of ours.
